URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LA CROSSE WI
946 AM CST SUN DEC 23 2007
, TREACHEROUS TRAVEL DUE TO LARGE WINTER STORM CONTINUES,
.WIDESPREAD LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW WILL CONTINUE OVER ALL OF
SOUTHEAST MINNESOTA, SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN, AND PORTIONS OF
NORTHEAST IOWA THROUGH TODAY. DESPITE THE FACT THE SNOW WILL BE OF
LIGHTER INTENSITY THAN THE SNOWFALL OVERNIGHT, THIS WINTER STORM
IS FAR FROM OVER, AND TRAVEL WILL REMAIN DANGEROUS AND NEARLY
IMPOSSIBLE IN MANY AREAS DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND THE CONTINUING
SNOW. SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW ADVISORIES, AS WELL AS WINTER STORM
WARNINGS, REMAIN IN EFFECT TODAY.
OVERNIGHT, A BAND OF 8 TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW FELL FROM PORTIONS OF
NORTHEAST IOWA INTO SOUTHWEST AND CENTRAL WISCONSIN, WITH A SHARP
GRADIENT OF SNOW TO THE WEST. IN FACT, AREAS FROM CHARLES CITY
NORTH THROUGH ROCHESTER TO LAKE CITY RECEIVED VERY LITTLE
SNOW, LESS THAN AN INCH. HOWEVER, MOVING EAST FROM THIS LINE
TOWARD THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BRINGS A RAPID INCREASE IN SNOWFALL
WITH CLOSE TO A FOOT OF SNOW HAVING FALLEN NEAR LA CROSSE AND
WINONA, AND THESE ACCUMULATIONS EXTEND EAST TOWARD
SPARTA, MEDFORD, AND NEILLSVILLE.
TODAY, PERSISTENT LIGHT SNOW OVER MOST OF THE AREA WILL ADD
ANOTHER 3 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW NORTH OF HIGHWAY 10, AND 2 TO 4
INCHES OF SNOW BETWEEN INTERSTATE 90 AND HIGHWAY 10. SOUTH OF
INTERSTATE 90, ANOTHER HALF INCH TO 2 INCHES WILL BE COMMON. SNOW
WILL FINALLY BEGIN TO TAPER OFF THIS EVENING. STRONG WINDS WILL
CONTINUE ALL DAY FROM WEST AND NORTHWEST, WITH SUSTAINED WINDS OF
15 TO 30 MPH, AND GUSTS FROM 35 TO 40 MPH. THIS WILL CAUSE
SIGNIFICANT DRIFTING, AND UNPLOWED ROADS WILL BE NEXT TO
IMPASSABLE FOR MOST OF THE AREA WHICH SAW SIGNIFICANT
ACCUMULATIONS. WINDS WILL BE SLOWER TO DIE DOWN, AND WILL PERSIST
INTO THE EVENING. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO HAMPER SNOW REMOVAL IN
OPEN AREAS BECAUSE OF DRIFTING ROADS, NOT TO MENTION THE FALLING
SNOW. THE ADVISORIES AND WARNINGS MAY NEED TO BE EXTENDED INTO THE
EVENING TO ACCOUNT FOR THE WIND AND BLOWING SNOW.
BY EVENING, TOTAL SNOW AMOUNTS FROM THIS WINTER STORM WILL RANGE
FROM 1 TO 4 INCHES ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA, AND FROM 4 INCHES TO
AS MUCH AS 18 INCHES IN THE WINTER STORM WARNING.

CST THIS AFTERNOON,
A SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST
THIS AFTERNOON.
SUSTAINED WEST WIND IN THE 20 TO 30 MPH RANGE, AND WIND GUSTS OF
AROUND 40 MPH, WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF
THE SNOW WHICH HAS ALREADY FALLEN. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL
HAZARDOUS TODAY. OCCASIONAL LIGHT SNOW WILL CONTINUE FOR MOST
AREAS THROUGH THE DAY WITH AN INCH OR TWO OF ACCUMULATION.
COMBINED WITH THE WINDS, THIS WILL ONLY WORSEN THE VISIBILITIES
FROM BLOWING SNOW.
A SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW ADVISORY MEANS THAT VISIBILITIES WILL BE
LIMITED DUE TO A COMBINATION OF FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW. USE
CAUTION WHEN TRAVELING, ESPECIALLY IN OPEN AREAS.

ICE, CREATING HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS ON UNTREATED SIDEWALKS AND
ROADS. A LIGHT ACCUMULATION OF SNOW TONIGHT OVER THE ICE WILL
INCREASE THE TRAVEL HAZARD.
