include regarding this dreadful event.
Missouri governor Matt Blunt has declaired a state of emergency across
Missouri due
to the ice. Oklahoma is getting the worst power outages in state history.
According
to power people in Iowa only about 34000 people are without power across
southern
Iowa a number sure to rise through the day. Des Moines, the largest school
district
in the state canseled today affecting around 31000 students.
l date has been set for Brewer.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowans are bracing for a wintry storm that
covered other
parts of the Midwest with a thick layer of ice yesterday.
That storm has blacked out more than 600,000 homes and businesses and
caused
at least 15 deaths in the region.
More icy weather is expected today, with the National Weather Service
posting
ice and winter storm warnings for parts of Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska,
and
Illinois.
About 1 inch of ice is expected to accumulate in parts of Iowa by this
afternoon,
followed by up to 5 inches of sleet and snow.
Frank Boksa, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Des
Moines, says
most of the ice will occur in southeast Iowa, where the temperatures are
higher,
with more snow accumulating in the northern parts.
Utility companies in Iowa are expecting the ice accumulations to cause
some
blackouts.
MidAmerican Energy officials say they put 500 workers on alert, but
that it's
possible some customers will be without power for more than a day.
DES MOINES --- MidAmerican Energy has three classifications for ice storms
from one
to three. Alan Urliss with MidAmerican says the one coming in tonight is a
category
two. That means power may be out for at least 24 hours. He says they are
calling
in every available crew. Urliss says in addition they have put all behind
the scenes
staff on alert to be ready to lend a hand if needed.
DES MOINES --- Right now Iowa is in a La Nina weather pattern. State
Climatologist
Harry Hillaker says that usually means winter gets off to a brutal start. He
says
if this follows the pattern the first month of winter will be cold and snowy
and
the last half of winter will be more typical.

TO ELEVATED SURFACES...INCLUDING BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES.
TEMPERATURES MEANWHILE OVER PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST AND WEST
CENTRAL ILLINOIS WILL REMAIN A FEW DEGREES ABOVE FREEZING THROUGH
EARLY AFTERNOON...THUS THE PRECIPITATION THERE WILL BE RAIN.
HOWEVER...BY MID TO LATE AFTERNOON NORTH WINDS WILL DEVELOP ACROSS
THE ENTIRE AREA AT AROUND 10 TO 15 MPH. THESE WINDS WILL BRING IN
SLIGHTLY COLDER AIR AT THE SURFACE RESULTING IN TEMPERATURES
