URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LA CROSSE WI
145 PM CST SUN FEB 24 2008
...ANOTHER WINTER STORM AND SLOW TRAVEL MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT...
.SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS STILL APPEAR POSSIBLE FOR PORTIONS
OF NORTHEAST IOWA INTO SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN FOR MONDAY AND MONDAY
NIGHT...AND A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT...AND HAS BEEN
EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE CHARLES CITY AND NEW HAMPTON IOWA AREAS.
CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO RUN BELOW AVERAGE WITH THIS WINTER
STORM...DUE TO A VARYING TRACK OF THE LOW PRESSURE IN THE LATEST FORECAST
DATA. THE CONSENSUS OF THE FORECAST GUIDANCE PLACES THE WINTER
STORM WATCH AREA ON THE NORTHERN FRINGE OF THE MAIN AXIS OF
HEAVIER PRECIPITATION...WHICH IS EXPECTED TO FALL ACROSS CENTRAL
AND EASTERN IOWA INTO NORTHERN ILLINOIS...GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF
INTERSTATE 80.
FURTHER COMPLICATING THE PICTURE...IS A WARM LAYER OF AIR ALOFT
WHICH WILL CAUSE THE FIRST FEW HOURS OF THE PRECIPITATION TO FALL
AS EITHER A WINTRY MIX...OR FREEZING RAIN...OR SLEET. IF
PRECIPITATION CHANGES TO SNOW MORE RAPIDLY...HEAVIER SNOW TOTALS
MAY BE SEEN. HOWEVER...IF THE CHANGE TO SNOW IS DELAYED...MORE
FREEZING RAIN OR SLEET MAY FALL...WHICH WILL SIGNIFICANTLY CUT
SNOWFALL TOTALS.
CURRENT DATA SUPPORTS A BAND OF HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...FROM 4
TO 7 INCHES...ALONG A CHARLES CITY TO WEST UNION TO BOSCOBEL
LINE...WITH A PERIOD OF SLEET OR FREEZING RAIN AT THE START. THE
HEAVIEST RATE OF PRECIPITATION...SHOULD FALL IN THE AFTERNOON TO
EARLY EVENING HOURS...WITH PRECIPITATION TAPERING OFF AFTER MIDNIGHT.
FURTHER DATA WILL HOPEFULLY REFINE THIS FORECAST EVEN MORE...WITH
THE WINTER STORM WATCH LIKELY MOVING TO A WINTER STORM WARNING OR
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY. AREAS TO THE NORTH...SHOULD ALSO MONITOR
THE LATEST STATEMENTS...AS THERE REMAINS A POSSIBILITY THAT WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORIES WILL BE NEEDED ACROSS THE REST OF NORTHEAST
IOWA AND SOUTHWEST WISCONSIN AS WELL.
IF YOU HAVE TRAVEL PLANS MONDAY INTO TUESDAY...STAY TUNED FOR
FURTHER UPDATES CONCERNING THIS WINTER STORM AND ITS AFFECT ON OUR
AREA.
