...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING
THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
A WINTER STORM WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO
THURSDAY BRINGING ACCUMULATING SNOW TO THE REGION. CURRENT
INFORMATION SUGGESTS A POTENTIAL FOR 4 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW WEST
OF A DUBUQUE TO WASHINGTON IOWA LINE. A FAIRLY SHARP GRADIENT IN
SNOW AMOUNTS IS POSSIBLE EAST OF THIS LINE WITH AREAS WELL EAST
OF THE MISSISSIPPI SEEING ONLY A FEW INCHES OF SNOW.
ADDITIONAL CONCERNS WITH THIS STORM WILL BE THE WIND AND SHARPLY
COLDER TEMPERATURES. THE SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BE FAIRLY DRY AND
WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE ON THURSDAY. WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH
WITH HIGHER GUSTS WILL CAUSE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF
THE SNOW. THE STRONG WINDS COMBINED WITH FALLING TEMPERATURES ON
THURSDAY ARE EXPECTED TO CREATE WIND CHILLS BELOW ZERO.
A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT
SNOW...SLEET...AND/OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS THAT WOULD SERIOUSLY
IMPACT TRAVEL. MONITOR LATER FORECASTS FOR UPDATES.

A WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON.
LOW PRESSURE MOVING NORTHEAST OUT OF THE SOUTH CENTRAL U.S. WILL
SPREAD SNOW ACROSS THE AREA WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. THE SNOW WILL
CONTINUE THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT...THEN GRADUALLY TAPER OFF FROM
SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST DURING THE AFTERNOON THURSDAY. SNOWFALL IS
EXPECTED TO BE IN THE 4 TO 8 INCH RANGE OVER MUCH OF THE
SOUTHEAST TWO THIRDS OF IOWA...WITH THE HEAVIEST BAND LIKELY TO
BE FROM WEST OF LAMONI...THROUGH DES MOINES...TO BETWEEN MASON
CITY AND WATERLOO.
IT DOES NOT APPEAR THAT BLOWING SNOW WILL BE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH
THIS STORM. HOWEVER...WINDS IN THE 15 TO 20 MPH RANGE WILL LIKELY CAUSE
CONSIDERABLE DRIFTING OF THE LIGHT FLUFFY SNOW. STRONGER
WINDS...NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THIS STORM...FRIDAY AFTERNOON WILL
LIKELY CAUSE MORE OF A PROBLEM WITH BLOWING SNOW.
A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT
SNOW...SLEET...OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS...HEAVY SNOW IN THIS CASE...THAT
MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.
