Twisters again pound Kansas
Powerful thunderstorms spawned tornadoes across western Kansas tonight, with scores of twisters reported.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.
The National Weather Service in Dodge City said damage was reported in Ellis County in west-central Kansas, including some structural damage in or near the city of Ellis.
At least two tornadoes reportedly touched down in the county, according to the weather service.
A spokesman for the Ellis County Emergency Management Center in Hays said one tornado struck Ellis about 8:30 p.m. and initial reports indicated damage to small buildings, trees and power lines. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
A farm family in Ellis County near the Trego County line reported several outbuildings and a barn destroyed, but no injuries.
Emergency management officials in Trego County also reported "a lot of damage."
"I've got everything imaginable right now," a harried dispatcher said, but there were no reports of injuries as of about 9:30 p.m.
In south-central Kansas, other damage was reported three miles west of Greensburg, which was leveled by a twister just more than a year ago. Power lines were reported down in Gray County, according to the weather service.
The town of Protection in Comanche County also reportedly was hit by a tornado, but crews sent to the town to assess the damage were delayed when they had to take cover from another storm that rolled through the area.
Power outages due to high wind were reported in Pawnee Rock in Barton County. Tornadoes were also spotted on the ground in Edwards County and Kiowa County.
Debris was reported falling from the sky about 12 miles west and northwest of Pratt.
The storms were expected to move east overnight and roll through the Kansas City area on Saturday.
